Election Commission: Presidential Candidates
Assalaamu Alaikum,
On behalf of the 2009-2010 MSA Elections Committee, we would like to explain the requested removal of Sr. Asma Ali, former nominee for President from the 2009-2010 MSA elections. Article 9, section 6 of the MSA constitution reads, “A candidate nominated for President must have been a member of the Executive Committee at least once during the previous two academic years”. The Elections Committee mistakenly accepted Sr. Asma’s nomination without realizing that it was violating the constitution, as Sr. Asma has not been a member of the Executive Committee during the previous two academic years, and thus she does not satisfy the above requirement . Therefore, to be faithful to the constitution, the Elections Committee has asked Sr. Asma to remove herself from the candidacy. As a result, Sr. Asma will no longer be a candidate for President in the 2009-2010 MSA Elections.
Br. Mueen Hakak who had also been nominated for the position for candidate has withdrawn his application citing “personal reasons”.
The Elections Committee is sincerely apologetic for their mistake and for any inconvenience we may have caused Sr. Asma and the MSA.
Please direct any questions or concerns to elections@uoftmsa.com
Jazakallah Khair,
MSA Elections Committee
